Free Year of Amazon Prime for Students!

July 13th, 2010 Greg Loesch No comments

I just wanted to make a quick post sharing the good news. If you’re a student with a .edu email address, you’re eligible for a free year of Amazon Prime! I just signed up, and the process was very quick. I don’t think any strings are attached… just to be safe you might set up a reminder in your calendar a year from now to check and make sure there is no auto-renewal.

For those of you who like to buy books online instead of in overpriced college bookstores, make sure you take advantage of this. Free 2-day shipping and more? Heck ya. Keep in mind that this won’t include all 3rd party sellers that just post on Amazon. Hard to beat free, though. Enjoy!

Gordon Gee and Glee!

May 4th, 2010 Greg Loesch 1 comment

Some fellow students of mine at the Ohio State University participated in a “flash mob” the other day at the Ohio Union, our new student union. I missed this by literally a few minutes. I went in to get tickets for something around 12:30pm. I thought there were an odd number of people just standing around doing “nothing.” Kinda disappointed I missed it.

FYI: The guy walking with Brutus near the end is Gordon Gee, our school president.

Check it out! (Note: To view higher quality, click the video to be transferred to YouTube.)

Read One Character at a Time – Java Programming

May 1st, 2010 Greg Loesch No comments

I was working on a parser for a programming project a few weeks ago for school in which reading an input file one character at a time proved to be the easiest route to take. While I found a few different resources online that provided some guidance, but I ran into a somewhat unexpected problem that was difficult to debug regarding detecting the end of stream (EOS)/end of file. This solution is not earth shattering (pretty intuitive actually), but I would have liked to have read something similar to this beforehand. It would have saved me a bit of time. Read more…

Keeping Perspective: School & Interviews, Life & God

March 6th, 2010 Greg Loesch 1 comment

This quarter has flown by with impressive speed.  Currently in the midst of my junior year in college, this velocity is not without reason.  While academically speaking this has not been my craziest quarter (last quarter still stands on that gold medal platform), I’ve been quite busy with interviews and… well… life.

At the moment, the search for a summer internship is the matter at hand. If I make an honest reflection of my life, prior to my search for an internship this summer, I’ve never really had to work hard to find work.  A lot of opportunities have just presented themselves due to family/friend connections, and I’ve more or less been able to find work without too much trouble. With the economy in its current state and simply because of where I am in life, this process has been different. It’s all new and has been a very self-revealing experience. I’m doing my best to keep perspective amongst the busyness. Read more…

Math Professor Quote

October 20th, 2008 Greg Loesch No comments

So today in class, one of my fellow students asked our math professor how he detemines the length of time we get to take the mid term. He explained that he times how long it takes for him to take the exam and multiplies that by 6.

That means it takes us an hour to do what takes him ten minutes… I thought that was pretty funny.
